For
many years, Ian has included hammered dulcimer compositions in his
concert repertoire and on his instrumental recordings. This set
is dedicated to those who asked for more.
Eleven of the
thirteen pieces were written to illustrate the range of the instrument,
while the two remaining pieces were written for guitar and plucked
autoharp. All pieces were written by Ian Tamblyn except Farewell
to Tarwaithie, a traditional Scots whaling song beautifully
sung by Rebecca Campbell.

| When
Will I See You Again $25 |
|

|
North
Track Records and Ian Tamblyn are proud to announce the re-release
of When Will I See You Again and Ghost Parade as a double CD set.
First released in 1980 and 1988, these recordings represent in many
ways, thematic and sonic bookends. When Will I See You Again was originally
released as an LP, while Ghost Parade saw life only during the golden
age of cassette releases. Both albums were originally recorded on
16 and 24 track analogue consoles and decks and retain their vibrancy
and depth of field. Both albums were re-mastered for their release
in the summer of 2002 by Martin Jones.

| Over
My Head - 1986 $20 |
|

First
came the concert then the CD. In the late fall of 1986 I received
a commission from the Museum of Nature to present a concert to
celebrate their forthcoming bird exposition. I decided it would
be best to concentrate on the birds I knew in my own backyard,
the Gatineau Hills of western Quebec. My neighbour, Michael Bostock,
was an avid birder and I had been with him on many birding outings.
I remember one day ditching the car twice in search of a Boreal
and Saw Whet Owls. But the problem was by late November most of
the birds had flown and I had already decided that I should follow
the seasons and their birds. Fortunately for me, a local bird
enthusiast and recorder, Monty Brigham, allowed me the use of
some his field recordings, others were purchased through the sound
library at Crawley films. In some cases the recordings were taken
intact but in many of the pieces on this recording they were labouriously
looped and recorded on tapes that sometimes extended across the
recording studio and then back to circle around the head of an
old Tandberg. Each loop was done this way and placed into the
mix. In the case of "Knock on Wood", for example, I
composed the piece around the percussive hammering of a Pileated
Woodpecker. Once the pieces were written and the loops were in
place we rehearsed the pieces with the loops and then headed to
the concert. Marty Jones was in charge of the loops and in some
cases we had to play to them, in other cases he had to start the
loop at exactly the right bar and stop it at the right time or
we were sunk! As I recall the concert went well and it was recorded
CBC radio by Richard Patterson. Requests came and Phil Bova and
I were encouraged enough to take the project back to the studio.
The album was recorded in less than a week. Since that time Over
My Head has sold close to 100,000 copies.

| Antarctica $20 |
|

|
The last of
the so called environmental albums. After five expeditions to the
north and near north with John Oliver he suggested that I join his
team to explore the under ice worlds of Antarctica. He might have
told me we were going to visit another planter because that is what
awaited me there. I think it is safe to say at this point I went
to Antarctica under somewhat false pretenses-there I was to be Ian
Tamblyn, marine biologist. During the time I spent at McMrdo, I
felt that everyday there I would be found out but only upon my return
did the director call the bluff. The submarine world of Antarctica
was both fascinating and frightening and the experience of this
crystal desert was nothing like the north I had been chasing, it
was not like anything north I had experienced at all. It was-Antartica.
Days were spent recording the surreal sounds of Weedell Seals, Adelie
and Emperor Penguins, diving the subterranean pumus slopes of the
volcano Mount Erebus, that smoked and rumbled 12,000 feet above
us. We visited the ghosts of Shackleton and Scott-the history of
early Antarctic exploration all around Ross Island.

| Magnetic
North - 1990 $20 |

|
This
collection of instrumental music blended with environmental sounds
began with my fascination with the north shore of Lake Superior
in the early seventies. I became interested in exploring the concept
of a spiritual north perhaps in a similar vein as Glenn Gould's
"Idea of North" series he did for the CBC, except I hadn't
heard of Glenn Gould's series until much later. In 1984 I was invited
north as a writer in residence on a scientific trip to the Chuckchi
Sea, north of the Bering Strait, to study he feeding habits of whales
and walrus. The experience changed my life and when I returned I
commenced this project. It was five years in the making. In the
interim, Over My Head and Ghost Parade were released. I was doing
a lot of theatre soundtrack music then and enjoyed writing pieces
where the mood was less deterministic than a verbal piece and yet
still told a story. Pieces on this album range from the Nahanni
River, Kodiak Island, Haida Gwaii, Lake Superior, Lancaster Sound
and Chukchi Sea. Nominated for Juno for Best Instrumental Album,
1990, this most Canadian of albums was refused Canada Council funding
for being supported by American scientists. I have never sought
Council funding since that time. The multi-discipline world of science
and arts had been tremendously rewarding, and I am forever grateful
to Dr. John Oliver of Moss Landing Marine Labs, Moss Landing California
for the opportunities he gave me.
